PAUL LINWOOD believes Chester will do well next season – with or without him.
The City central defender is currently out of contract and having ongoing talks with Blues boss Simon Davies and Chester City managing director, Bob Gray.

He said: "It's not nice being out of contract, but I sat down semi-serious with Simon Davies and we've agreed to sit down again in the next couple of weeks and see if there is anything there.

"It's good to know that someone like Simon Davies who knows his football wants me to stay at Chester and speaks so highly of me.

"He would be a really good fella to work for and whether I'm here or not I know that Chester will do well next season with him in charge.

"Nothing really gets talked about until everyone knows where they are in pre-season.

"I've already spoken to Bob Gray and Simon Davies and we now need to sit down and see where we all are and gradually it will all get sorted."

Linwood, who celebrated a clean-sweep of four Chester City Player of the Year Awards before Saturday's goalless draw against Macclesfield Town, joined the Blues from Tranmere Rovers.

He added: "I couldn't have asked any more than four awards at the presentation before the match on Saturday.

"I've really enjoyed every minute of the season, although there have been bad times such as the back end of the season when we didn't know whether we were going to be safe.

"But we're a young team and hopefully we can grow.

"There has been loads of changes this season, but I personally learned an awful lot from playing alongside Paul Butler.

"He helped me out a great deal and then for me to pass on some of that experience that he has passed on to Shaun Kelly and Kevin Roberts feels really good."

Linwood underlined the relief felt by City players, backroom staff and fans, after escaping the threat of relegation.

He said: "I think everyone was just relieved to see Chester safe after our 0-0 home draw against Stockport County.

"And that showed in our last match on Saturday against Macclesfield. It was a typical end of season game, but we finished the season on a bit of a high with three clean sheets and three points.

"But we've now got to take something from the season.

"I'm just glad that we secured our safety before Saturday because it would have been a lot more tense and there wouldn't have been a lot of pretty football to watch. We were just made up to get it out of the way so we could relax."

- Chester City Supporters Trust will hold their annual general meeting at The Home Guard Club, Canal Street, Chester, on Thursday, May 22.

Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Those attending will need to be a current member, but new applications will be welcomed on the night.
