Sandwith released after rejecting new Chester deal
SIMON DAVIES has reflected on the disappointment of seeing a first team squad player leave.
The Chester City boss confirmed that defender Kevin Sandwith had been released after turning down a new 12 month contract.
Davies said: "The club offered Kevin Sandwith a new one year deal and we gave him time to consider the offer.
"I wanted Kevin to play a part as a squad player for next season, but unfortunately the idea didn't suit him and he decided to leave.
"It is disappointing to lose someone like Kevin."
Sandwith had a good run in the starting line-up towards the end of the season, and had been with Chester for the past two seasons.
Meanwhile, Davies admitted he was treating the signing of defender Paul Linwood as a priority.
Davies met the 24-year-old Linwood last night and was scheduled to meet him again this afternoon in a bid to persuade the centre half to sign a new contract.
Davies wants to build his team around the former Tranmere Rovers defender who enjoyed a clean sweep of four trophies at the Chester City Player of the Year Awards.
Linwood's contract expires on June 30, but Chester have taken up their option for another 12 months and offered the player a new two-year deal.
Davies said: "I had constructive talks with Paul Linwood last night and I'm due to meet him again today.
"There are still one or two little things to iron out and Paul needs to think about a few details before coming back to us.
"Trying to secure the services of a player like Paul Linwood is my main priority this week and I'm confident an agreement can be reached.
"It is vital that I try and sort out a few things in-house before focusing my mind on any new signings.
"I was pleased to see young Sean Newton agree a deal with the club, and securing the services of Linny would be massive for everyone concerned at Chester."
And Davies revealed that he had not received any inquiry for any Chester players since the season finished, adding: "Everything is quiet as far as other clubs showing interest in any Chester players.
"The reason for this is probably due to teams being involved in play-offs or people going away, but I'm obviously pleased about that situation because I can get on with getting our own house in order."
