County Fire Safety Officer, Flintshire

The first thing Kevin does when he wakes up is help feed and dress his seven week old baby girl, Gracie.

He then gets himself ready for work, has a cup of coffee and something to eat before driving to work at the fire station in Flint.

Kevin arrives at work for an 8.30am start.

He said: "When I get to work, I have a discussion with the staff about anything that has happened overnight and any fire calls we have responded to.

"I then work to see how we can prevent incidents happening again."

Kevin's job involves providing safety advice to the community and he develops and run campaigns to keep people safe from the dangers of fire.

He said: "I often meet with Flintshire County Council, social services and North Wales Police to work on initiatives.

"This helps get my message across and promote our free home safety checks."

Kevin takes his lunch between 12.30 and 1.30pm, which he says can sometimes be a working lunch.

Because of the nature of his job, there is a rota for being on call.

When Kevin is on call, he can attend incidents during the night, usually call-outs which are attended by five appliances or more, or if anyone is hurt in a fire.

He also attends fires that are cooking related, as reducing the number of cooking fires is a top priority of the fire service and his job is to look at ways of preventing them.

After leaving work at 5pm, Kevin drives home to spend time with his fiancee Rachel and daughter Gracie.

He said: "I like to spend time with my fiancee and get to know my little girl."

Then, at 7.30pm, Kevin goes to the North Wales Marshall Arts centre to train and instruct.

On his return he likes to walk the dog and sometimes he will be called out to an incident.

On Thursday afternoons, Kevin is given time out from work to study for his MSc in Management.

He said: "The service actively promote further development for its staff and have been supportive in giving me time off to study."
