THE success of the Fron Choir has rubbed off on its youngest member and apprentice accompanist, Alex Hughes.
The ensemble's penchant for winning awards has rubbed off on the next generation after the teenager was handed the Emyr James Memorial Cup for composition at the recent Wrexham Youth Musical Festival held at Rhos' Stiwt Theatre.

Alex, who lives in Wrexham, is a student at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd where he recently sat his GCSE exams.

Although still only 15-years-old, he is one of the three regular organists at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Wales, King Street, Wrexham.

Alex has been 'learning the ropes' with the choir to add 'choral accompanist' to his musical accomplishments.

Choir chairman David Jones said: "With Alex's interest in male voice choirs it was quite appropriate that he won the Emyr James Memorial Trophy.

"The trophy was sponsored by Rhos Male Voice Choir in memory of the late Emyr James who was their deputy musical director and of course was also once the Fron's deputy music director."

Musical director Ann Atkinson added: "Alex has done very well and the choir are thrilled for him. Emyr is well known to choirs throughout Britain for his numerous choral arrangements."

The trophy was presented by Bronwen James, the widow of Emyr James.

Alex intends to make music his career by hopefully becoming a music teacher.

His immediate plans are to stay on in the sixth form and continue to work with the Fron Male Voice Choir.
