ALL 10 post offices in Wrexham earmarked for closure are to shut – despite a public consultation which revealed thousands of residents were opposed to the plans.
Post Office Ltd revealed the news today following a seven-week public consultation exercise which ended last month.

It means branches in Marchwiel, New Broughton, Ponciau, Rhosymedre, Tanyfron, Trevor, Acton Park, Bradley, Rhosrobin, and Summerhill will now shut.

The closures will be completed by January 2009. In Acton Park alone, more than 1,000 residents signed a petition opposing the closure.

Maesydre councillor Carole O'Toole, who organised the protest, said she was devastated by the news, which she claimed would hit older residents the hardest.

"It is absolutely devastating and I'm bitterly disappointed because we fought a very strong campaign and got a huge response from across the community," she said.

Wrexham Council leader Aled Roberts said: "We are very, very disappointed with the news for postal services in the areas affected and we now need to work with post offices to try to ensure postal services are available in those areas.

"It is quite clear from the response to the consultation that all services to the areas affected were doomed as soon as the Government announced the criteria for the closures."

Nine branches will close in Martyn Jones' Clwyd South constituency, with the MP branding the announcement "simply ridiculous".

He said: "I cannot believe that this result has come from any form of genuine consultation.

"The Post Office had a fortnight to consider the heartfelt views of many of my constituents, who expressed themselves eloquently on many of the forms I reviewed.

"They have chosen to ignore the thoughts and feelings of local people."

Clwyd South AM Karen Sinclair added: "News that the closure programme is to proceed in Clwyd South as planned is disgraceful news.

"Not one of the post office closures in the constituency that was objected to by the community and myself was reversed."

Wrexham MP Ian Lucas said he was "saddened" by the announcement that four post offices in his constituency were to close.

He said: "Obviously, this is very bad news and I am deeply saddened by the decision all four post offices are to close.

"I am very sorry indeed they did not agree with the case I made for each branch to stay open."

Brymbo councillor Paul Rogers hit out at the region's Westminster and Cardiff representatives, saying they had to bear some of the blame.

He said: "Tanyfron and other communities affected by closures have been let down by their local MPs."

Cllr Rogers added: "Local MPs should listen to their constituents on such emotive issues.

"I am deeply concerned about the impact upon the community spirit in Tanyfron and will do all I can to support the village and its needs."

All affected branches will now display a poster informing their customers about the decision that has been reached.

Further information will be provided shortly afterwards in branch to confirm the actual date that the change will take place.

Steve Geraty, Post Office Ltd's network development manager for Wales, said: "These are difficult decisions which have not been taken lightly.

"We have considered very carefully all the comments made during the public consultation and we believe that the amended plan announced today offers our customers across the North Wales area the best prospect for a sustainable network in the future, bearing in mind the UK Government's minimum access criteria and the other factors the UK Government has asked us to consider."
