DISTRAUGHT communities across Flintshire have today been forced to accept defeat in the fight to save their post offices.
All of the 11 branches earmarked for closure earlier in the year are definitely being axed. Not one has been granted a reprieve.

In a further blow, plans for a trial outreach service to replace the branch in Golftyn, Connah's Quay, have been shelved.

Sub-postmasters, politicians and residents are today coming to terms with the news that Flintshire is to lose about a fifth of its post offices.

Golftyn Cllr Peter Macfarlane said: "I'm not entirely surprised by the decision but I'm bitterly disappointed – we've always felt that the public consultation was just a PR exercise and no more than that.

"It seems these big institutions take no notice whatsoever of the impact their decisions have on the communities they purport to serve.

"In Golftyn, this is going to be a huge loss to a section of the community which is already vulnerable and it will result in a further degradation of the area.

"The outreach service would have been better than nothing."

Brynford Cllr Matt Wright said the post office was the last shop in his village and that its closure will be a disaster.

He said: "This is deeply depressing news. No one in their wil.dest dreams expected huge numbers to be saved, but I would have thought there would have been more scope to keep one or two open, given all of the evidence put forward during the public consultation."

All of the affected branches are expected to close by January 2009, with exact closure dates being announced within a month.

The only branch to be saved in North Wales following a seven-week consultation period from July 29 – September 15 is Cerrigydrudion, Corwen.

Across North Wales, 271 branches are being retained. A total of 48 are closing, with 13 outreach services being set up.

During the consultation period, which Flintshire county councillors recently branded a "sham", a total of 1,450 responses were received.

Regarding the outreach service in Connah's Quay, a Post Office Ltd spokesman said: "It may not be possible to implement this trial at this juncture."

Steve Geraty, Post Office Ltd's network development manager for Wales, said: "These are difficult decisions which have not been taken lightly.

"We have considered very carefully all the comments made during the public consultation and we believe that the amended plan announced today offers our customers across the North Wales area the best prospect for a sustainable network in the future, bearing in mind the UK Government's minimum access criteria and the other factors the UK Government has asked us to consider."

Axed post offices:

- Golftyn
- Pontybodkin
- Brynford
- Carmel
- Gronant
- Gwernymynydd
- Holway
- Lixwm
- New Brighton
- Rhosesmor
- Cymau
