MOTHERS in Flintshire have been highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding.
As part of Breastfeeding Awareness Week, a group of mums met at a cafe in Mold and showed that breastfeeding can be discreet.

Abigail Roberts, 31, from Mancot, has volunteered as a support worker to help other mums who are struggling with breastfeeding.

She said: "When I was pregnant with my second child, I thought I would try to support people and did a course. I have been in the same situation myself and I can sympathise."

First time mum, Jennifer Parting, 36, from Buckley, had help from Abigail when breastfeeding five-month-old Jack.

Jennifer said: "I was struggling and the midwife gave me Abigail's number. She came round and helped me to continue breastfeeding – the advice was invaluable.

"You just expect it to come naturally and it doesn't."

Julia Bryan, co-owner of "breastfeeding friendly" cafe, Truly Scrumptious, on King Street, said: "We welcome well-behaved children.

"We don't have a problem with breastfeeding at all – some people sit in a corner and some people sit in the middle of the room.

"We've had no complaints from customers and I don't expect to get any – people are quite liberal about it now."

Abigail said: "This breastfeeding-friendly cafe is fantastic – breastfeeding is natural and can be discreet."

She added that breastfeeding helps to save money and the environment, and said: "In today's society, when people are trying not to be wasteful, breastfeeding is a good example of helping the environment.

"You don't have to boil the kettle every time you need a bottle, you don't have to throw away packaging and you save on the costs as well."

As part of Breastfeeding Awareness Week, health visitors and mums will be raising awareness at Tesco in Mold tomorrow from 9.30am.

Anyone who needs help with breastfeeding can contact the Children's Information Service on 01244 547017.

Wales has some of the lowest breastfeeding rates in Western Europe and this week singer Charlotte Church has backed a Welsh Assembly Government drive to encourage mothers to breastfeed.
