AN APPEAL has been made for bowlers to take part in a fundraising event for a brave 14-year-old girl who is fighting cancer.
Supporters of Sophie Edwards have organised a large-scale sponsored bowls contest to help Sophie and her loving family.
Terry Williams, the sponsorship officer for the Welsh Crown Green Bowling Association, wants as many people as possible in the Wrexham area to take part in the competition.
Terry and the rest of his colleagues involved in arranging the fundraiser are pleased with the initial response from the public to the appeal, including support from Chirk-based company Kronospan where Sophie’s father Neil is employed.
But they are calling for even more people to get involved and Terry said the target would be to get more than 100 bowlers taking part in the sponsored competition.
Sophie was diagnosed as having a tumour on her spine in the spring. Exhaustive tests were carried out and showed that the condition was inoperable.
“The only treatment available to Sophie was intensive chemotherapy at Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital lasting more than six months, which she has courageously endured,” said Terry, of Maesywaun, Chirk.
“At a recent scan to see whether the tumour had diminished the family had to face the heart-breaking news that it was unchanged. The only alternative was intensive radiotherapy, again at Birmingham. It is a journey the family have to make every day.”
Terry said the bowling community is a very special and friendly one and he feels it would be wonderful if followers of the sport could come together to help Sophie.
