A BUDDING filmmaker has won a prize at a major film festival.
Sam Jones, a student at North Wales School of Art and Design in Wrexham, jointly won the Music Media Award at this year's student moving image festival of Wales, Ffresh 2008.

Sam's winning entry is a promotional trilogy for a local band called Lea
ving Isaac's Shop filmed to promote the band to music publishers.

The category judge, Radio One DJ Huw Stephens, said: "This is an excellent video that is stylish and powerful and captures the mood of the band."

Sam was also shortlisted for another entry, a fun drum sequence called Drum Film.

Huw said this was funny, simple and effective. "The colours were great and it brings a smile," he added.

"Overall the standard was high, the videos a pleasure to watch, a lot with original ideas and a clear vision."

Judges at the two-day festival gave awards to students from Wrexham Cardiff, Newport and Lampeter.

Festival chairman Maggie Russell said: "For two packed days the arts centre was buzzing with excitement; not only film makers eager to see if they had won an award and people talking about the variety of showcases, talks and presentations, but also networking, sharing experiences and, hopefully, the next generation of Wales' burgeoning moving image industry meeting their future employers.

"Some incredible talent has emerged this year and I am really excited to see how projects and ideas we have seen at Ffresh develop in the coming months and years.

"We were also able to report back on what award winners from previous festivals are now up to which I know was inspirational for the students who made this year's event such a great success."
