RESIDENTS are calling for action to make life easier for pensioners living in sheltered accommodation in Flintshire.
Campaigners are calling for intercom and battery charging facilities to be fitted in all sheltered housing flats in Prince William Court, Aston.

Pensioners living in first floor flats do not have intercoms on their doors and many struggle to get downstairs to answer their door when they have visitors.

There is currently a seven month waiting list for those who wish to apply to Flintshire Council for intercom facilities to be fitted.

Many of the residents also get around using electric scooters, which run on batteries that need to be charged regularly.

There are currently no indoor charging facilities for the residents at Prince William Court to use, which means a number of elderly people have to struggle upstairs to charge the heavy batteries in their homes.

Councillors George Hardcastle and Helen Gambino are backing the calls, and Cllr Hardcastle said: "It is a ridiculous situation. We are living in 2008 and all flats should have intercom facilities fitted and pensioners should not have to be struggling to get up and down the stairs.

"The waiting list for intercoms to be fitted should also be made much shorter.

"Many residents have told me that by the time they get downstairs when their doorbell rings, the visitors have gone.

"Intercom facilities would enable them to find out who is calling straight away and they would not have to struggle up and down the stairs unnecessarily.

"A lot of the residents also rely on their scooters to get around and more charging points need to be fitted so they can be charged quickly and without difficulty."

Cllr Gambino said: "Intercoms should be fitted in all sheltered accommodation across the county in my opinion and priority should go to those living on top floors. I would also like to see provision made for all of the residents to be able to charge their batteries easily and safely."
