Flintshire Councillors are demanding answers over the number of patients using a closure-threatened hospital.
Flint Coleshill councillor, Alex Aldridge, is preparing to submit a request under the Freedom of Information Act, in an effort to determine the usage of the town's community hospital.

Cllr Aldridge has spearheaded a campaign to retain the vital ho
spital beds in his town, ever since Flintshire Local Health Board suggested its closure in 2006.

He has also been lobbying for a state-of-the-art health centre to be built in the town, similar to those planning in Connah's Quay, Buckley, Hope and Mold.

Cllr Aldridge said: "We need to compare the usage of the hospital over the past 12 months with that of Holywell and Deeside community hospitals, in order to prove our hospital is well-used and provides a vital service to the people of Flint.

"We can ask for the information to be provided by the NHS Trust at first and if we are unable to get it, then we can submit a Freedom of Information request."

Under the new configuration of NHS facilities in Wales, Flintshire LHB is set to be abolished and will be run as part of a combined north Wales trust.

As the Evening Leader reported earlier this month, the health board's current chief executive, Barry Harrison, is to step down at the end of March.

Members of Flint Town Council have agreed to invite his successor to a meeting, along with the future chief executive of the new trust.

Cllr Aldridge said: "I hope that, under the new system, we will be able to progress health care services for Flint residents."
