A COUPLE have relived the moment their car was shunted by a driver who then did a U-turn and drove the wrong way down the A55.
Elen Fletcher was driving towards Chester with her husband Bill when the accident happened near Pentre Halkyn.
Mrs Fletcher, a retired teacher, said the icy driving conditions were hazardous and as she approached Holywell the traffic was starting to build up because of an accident.
She said: "We were driving along and there had been three accidents in the vicinity and we were in the tail end of a queue.
"I saw this dark coloured saloon car driving at terrific speed towards us and then he hit us.
"My rear window shattered and there were bits of his car in my car.
"I broke quite hard so there wasn't quite as much damage to the vehicle in front.
"He then made a U-turn and drove the wrong way down the road."
Mrs Fletcher had been shunted into a Ford Focus.
As the driver sped off against the flow of traffic, other drivers had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision.
"Our glasses were broken and my husband's mouth was bleeding because he bit the inside of his lip," added Mrs Fletcher, who lives in Caernarfon.
"We went to the casualty department and they said we have soft tissue injury which is what they call whiplash now."
As we reported yesterday, the incident happened on the eastbound carriageway near Pentre Halkyn, at about 10.30am on Monday.
The driver is alleged to have done a u-turn and driven half a mile down the A55, before coming off on to the A5025.
North Wales Police are examining CCTV footage from the A55 at Holywell and are keen to trace the driver of a dark-coloured Ford Mondeo.
