THERE were bouquets of flowers for Elaine Paige, who gave a superb performance at last night's opening concert of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.
The star of the West End and Broadway showed her outstanding talent as she took the packed pavilion on a journey through the last 40 years of her life in musical theatre.

From the heady days of Hair in 1968, through to other hit shows, such as Piaf, Chess, Sunset Boulevard, Cats and Evita, Paige wowed her appreciative audience.

With an energy and enthusiasm which belies her years, she sang her signature songs, Don't Cry for Me Argentina, from Evita, I Know Him So Well, from Chess, and Memory, from Cats, which brought her a standing ovation.

Accompanied by a 13-piece orchestra of London musicians who did not miss a beat, it was a night to remember and a wonderful way to kick off the eisteddfod.
