Held at the Queen Hotel, the gathering brought together more than 100 participants and speakers from 19 countries including Canada, USA, Colombia, South Africa and Taiwan.
The conference covered diverse topics, including presentations on the lates
t research and practical experience in zoo animal nutrition.
Dr Andrea Fidgett, Chester Zoo's animal nutritionist, organised the conference. She said: "Nutrition is a vital element of animal care and everyone who should be talking to each other about this, namely animal keepers, vets, feed companies and researchers studying these species in their natural habitat, were gathered in one place to exchange information and ideas."
Key conference topics included ethical and sustainable considerations in feeding zoo animals and the role of plants in providing nutrition for zoo herbivores.
A total of 55 presentations were given ranging in subject from nutritional ecology of free ranging black rhinoceros, fruits as foods, and an introduction to technology when feeding fish.
The conference is held about every two years and previous zoo hosts include Rotterdam, Antwerp and Leipzig.
