Family's tribute to Wrexham teen who died in sand dune tragedy
THE DEVASTATED family of the Wrexham teenager killed when a sand tunnel collapsed on him have spoken for the first time of the youngster who had "a passion for life".
Speaking exclusively to the Evening Leader, Craig Owen's parents, Jayne and Ron, of Brymbo, have told of their grief and devastation at losing their "wonderful son".
The 16 year-old was on holiday with his parents in Carmarthenshire when the tragedy unfolded on Sunday evening.
In a heartfelt statement, Mr and Mrs Owen spoke lovingly of the son who, they said, had "so much to live for".
They revealed that the Ysgol Bryn Alun pupil had been expecting good grades in his GSCE results in two weeks' time and that he had spoken of going to university to become a maths teacher.
They said: "Craig was such a special person that no words are really adequate. He brought pleasure to everyone that knew him.
"Craig had a passion for life – an action person who took part in all family activities whether it be holidays, cycling, canoeing, skiing or just taking the lead at family functions.
"The world was at his feet and so tragically taken away in a brief second of misjudgment.
"The death of Craig will be greatly felt throughout the community of Brymbo and far beyond as Craig was well liked by all who knew him.
"All his friends that we have spoken to have their own treasured memories of Craig and we know how much they valued their friendship.
"He was a wonderful son, brother and uncle to his niece and was such a happy, friendly person.
"In his short life, Craig experienced many happy times and received and gave so much affection."
The couple also paid tribute to the emergency services who battled to save Craig after he became trapped under several tonnes of sand at Cefn Sidan beach in Pembrey Country Park.
They added: "We are all very grateful to the police, fire crews, air ambulance, ambulance service, coastguard and doctors and nurses at Morriston Hospital, Swansea for the loving care and concern given to the family throughout this sad time."
They also gave a special commendation to one of Craig's friends parents who stayed with Craig before the emergency crews arrived and thanked friends, neighbours and colleagues who have expressed their sympathy and condolences.
Craig's funeral will take place on Tuesday, August 12 at 1.30pm at Pentrebychan crematorium. The family have stated that there is no need for black tie, and mourners are invited to wear rugby shirts if they wish to. All donations are to be made to the Welsh Air Ambulance.
