WREXHAM town centre was a riot of colour last night as the countdown to Christmas began with the switching on of the town's festive lights.
Wrexham's streets were filled with early seasonal cheer as the illuminations were turned on by the mayor, Cllr David Griffiths, in Queens Square.

This was followed by a spectacular fireworks display after which there was an exclusive performance by local group, The Misguided Fools.

Before the switch on Grove Park Theatre gave an exclusive preview of this year's panto, Aladdin, and stores such as BHS and Woolworths stayed open late to attract early Christmas shoppers.

Cllr Griffiths said: "It was excellent. It was lovely to see all the children there and they certainly enjoyed the entertainment from the theatre.

"Crowds really got into the feeling that Christmas was starting. The fireworks display was one of the best I've seen. Overall it was a wonderful event enjoyed by all."

In addition to acts on stage, there were a host of children's fairground rides and refreshments, including a hog roast, on Queens Square.

The event was organised by Wrexham Council's economic development department and was sponsored by the Evening Leader.

The centrepiece of the display, the Christmas tree on Queens Square, has been sponsored by Allington Hughes Solicitors.

Future festive events planned in the town include a Victorian Christmas market, the arrival of Father Christmas, and an evening of camels and carols. The ever popular grotto will be open on Queens Square from the evening of December 4 right up until Christmas Eve.

The majority of the events take place on Thursday evenings to complement late night shopping nights, while most stores will also be opening on Sundays throughout the build up to Christmas.
