A SHRINKING congregation has led to one of the Flintshire's oldest churches being forced to close.
Bagillt United Reformed Church, which has stood on the village's high street for more than a century, will close its doors for the last time on October 19, due to a dramatic decline in membership and funding.

Secretary and organist Jean Needham, w
ho has been a member of the church for more than 50 years, said: "It is with deep sadness and regret that we have had to take the decision to close the church.

"We have struggled for many years to keep it open, and feel very fortunate to have been able to serve the people of the village for so long, but we now have to be realistic and look to the future.

"We have done all we can to try and keep it going and it is very sad for all of us."

There are just six members left at the church, which began in 1877 and opened its current building in 1896. They will now move to St John's United Reformed Church in Flint, from November 2.

Bagillt councillor Mike Reece said: "The numbers at churches are declining and I have seen nine close in the area since I was young. It really is a shame to see our village church close."

Miss Needham added: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support."
