THEY may have been dubbed the world's oldest boyband – but the Fron Male Voice Choir have proved they've got serious staying power after their third album stormed into the UK top 20.
Voices of the Valley: Home entered the charts at number 14, much to the delight of Fron Male Voice Choir's members, who recently teamed up with Australian legend Rolf Harris to record his 1969 Christmas number one Two Little Boys.

That song was released on the same date, last Monday, but has yet failed to make a dent in the top 40 - though it has only been released as a download single.

Choir member David Jones said: "The album has gone into the pop charts and looking at the actual pop albums we've come in at number 14. In terms of classical acts, Katherine Jenkins is behind us, so is Jonathan Ansell, and also Andrea Bocelli.

"Whether we're the number one classical act depends on whether you count Il Divo (who are number one). We don't know whether it has made it to the top of the classical charts - they are usually a week behind so we will find out soon.

"The single hasn't made it but then it's not available in the shops, so that's not really a surprise. It's download-only at the moment."

Last Monday Rolf and the group performed together for 200 pensioners at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London.

The 60 members have a combined age of 3,947, making the choir the oldest boyband in the world – and 78-year-old Rolf took that total to over 4,000.

There are further gigs planned for the ensemble, including Wrexham's William Aston Hall this Friday as well as further dates in Chester, Manchester and Birmingham.

After that the group could be taking a well-earned rest from their hectic schedule.

Dave said: "We could do with a break, it's been a strenuous two or three years. Still, we've got quite a few concerts lined up.

"We'll be performing again at the New Vic (in Newcastle-under-Lyme) next month.

"We've played there for the past 28 years so we're on first name terms with a lot of the audience members!"
