A CHARITY banquet at a restaurant raised more than £1,000.
About 90 people went to the event at Country Spice Bangladeshi and Indian Cuisine in Hope and all the money raised went to the Nightingale House Hospice and the Just Help Foundation.

The event was organised by the managing director of the restaurant Shamsuddin Ahmed MBE, who was recently invited to Buckingham Palace in recognition of his services to the British Hospitality Industry.

Mr Ahmed, of Glebe Meadows, Mickle Trafford, Chester, told the Leader: "It was hard work but we enjoyed it and would like to thank everybody for coming along and donating to charity."

Diners enjoyed entertainment from Mold-based Cambria Drum Band before tucking into chicken bhuna, lamb tarkari and rice.

Speaking at the event the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr David Griffiths, said: "Fundraising is a very difficult job especially in this economic climate and I'm grateful to Mr Ahmed for organising this."

Other guests included Judge Stephen Clarke, the circuit and probation board judge for Cheshire; Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami, Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant, and Norman Land, chairman of the trustees of Nightingale House Hospice.

Judge Clarke said: "Charity functions are all about seeking to do good in the community and we have gone to a range of events over the years by Mr and Mrs Ahmed.

"They are always at the forefront of organising it and are a lovely couple.

Nightingale Hospice provides specialist palliative care services to patients and families across Wrexham, Flintshire and surrounding areas.

The Just Help Foundation is raising money to provide homes for those in poverty in Bangladesh.

A Wrexham Football Club shirt and a bottle of whisky were later auctioned off.

People can donate to the charities by calling the restaurant on 01978 762330.
