Latest article>> 150 jobs to go at Flexsys factory near Wrexham - FULL REPORTOne of the region's biggest employers is to cease operations at its plant in Cefn Mawr, near Wrexham, before the end this year.
The T&G section of Unite has reported that Flexsys, at Ruabon Works, made the shock announcement that production will end at the plant in November with 162 employees to be made redundant.
This is the second blow for the area in a matter of months, after tile-manufacturer, Dennis, Ruabon, went into administrative receivership and 68 jobs were axed in February.
There have also been a series of redundancies at various manufacturing sites in Wrexham including JCB and food producer Fenmark.
Peter Hughes, senior regional industrial organiser at the T&G section of Unite said: "The announcement was made at 2pm today at a meeting between senior management, myself and the trade union's council.
"They are looking to close down their operations at the Ruabon Works by November and 162 employees will be made redundant by December.
"On the back of Dennis going, the community of Ruabon has taken two massive hits in the space of just four months.
"Flexsys are good payers in the manufacturing sector."
It is believed the closure process will take place in phases over the next three years.
Flexsys plant manager, Simon Howarth, said: "Increasing competition from low-cost manufacturers in the Far East has led to this decision to exit those parts of the Flexsys business served by the Ruabon Works site.
"While our people have worked tirelessly in recent years to ensure a safe and cost-effective operation at Ruabon, Flexsys has been forced to make this difficult decision to secure its wider business.
"In making this announcement Flexsys regrets the loss of employment and the impact this will have on the lives of its employees at Ruabon and will do all it reasonably can to provide assistance to them.
"The company also recognises that this closure represents the end of an era for a manufacturing site with a long and distinguished history."
