A FIRE chief has admitted that it took crews in Llangollen 20 minutes to reach a fatal blaze less than half a mile away because there was no "suitably qualified" manager at the time of the incident.
John Jones Morris, 79, died in the fire at a house in Dee Lane in the early hours of Monday morning, with the blaze thought to have been caused by a faulty electric blanket.

It has since emerged that a Llangollen fire crew took nearly 20 minutes t
o arrive despite being based about half a mile away, while firefighters from Chirk, about seven miles away, arrived in 16 minutes.

Deputy fire chief officer Colin Hanks said: "We can confirm that the reason that Llangollen was delayed was the lack of a suitably qualified manager or a firefighter who had received incident command training.

"This is a policy within the service, and is in place to protect the health and safety of our staff at incidents, and ensure they have suitably trained managers."

Mr Hanks added: "In 2007, Llangollen was able to attend 99.8 per cent of night time incidents within their service area.

"Only eight night-time hours throughout the whole year were covered by other stations.

"Last year in North Wales, our average time to attend an incident was seven minutes and 53 seconds. Chirk, the first crew on scene at this incident, arrived within 16 minutes, and the crew from Llangollen arrived within 19 minutes."

Mr Jones was treated at the scene by ambulance crews but was later pronounced dead. A joint investigation with North Wales Police has begun.

Earlier on in the evening he had been drinking in the Hand Hotel in the town.

It is thought his electric blanket was faulty.

Richard Fairhead, senior fire safety manager with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "It is very important that people with electric blankets store them correctly when they are not in use.

"Folding the electric blankets can cause damage to the wires within the blanket.

"They should be stored flat or rolled up. Before the blankets are used after seasonal storage, they should be checked to ensure they operate correctly."
