THE young son of Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami will undergo a major operation this week to treat his leukaemia.
Max Tami, who celebrated his 10th birthday a week ago, was diagnosed with the illness in August last year at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital and was transferred immediately to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool to begin chemotherapy.
He suffered a serious reaction to the first stages of his treatment and endured a prolonged spell in intensive care.
He also suffered from acute renal failure, which added to the complications.
Since then, however, Max has made good progress and in November returned to Llanfynydd Primary School for a couple of days each week.
On Thursday, he will undergo a stem-cell bone marrow transplant at Alder Hey.
He is being given intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment to ensure that he is ready for surgery.
Mr Tami said: "Max is still doing well and has remained very positive and happy throughout his illness.
"Being at school and seeing his friends has helped to give Max a brighter outlook and he enjoyed his birthday on Monday, when he had a party with several of his friends.
"He is in much better shape than he was when he was first diagnosed in the summer, so we are all thinking positively now."
Llanfynydd Primary School headteacher David Parry added: "Max has some difficult times ahead, but we want to keep as positive as we can for him and we wish him all the best.
"Everyone is thinking of him and we are all really looking forward to having him back with us full time."
