A MOTHER campaigning for vital medical treatment for her sick daughter hopes that her appeal will soon be recognised as a charity.
Kelly Lloyd, 24, of Pentre, has spent the past few weeks tirelessly campaigning to raise money to fund vital medical treatment for her 14-month-old daughter Brooklyn, who suffers from a rare and extreme form of alpha-1 antitrypsin, an abnormal liver function that can progress to liver disease and liver failure, together with other complications, such as emphysema.

There is no available cure for the condition in the UK and Kelly is hoping to raise £30,000 to fund specialist enzyme replacement therapy for Brooklyn, which is only available in North America.

Brooklyn's plight has touched scores of people across the county and a number of local residents and organisations have got involved and are trying to raise as much money as possible for the toddler.

A fundraising committee has now been set up by Kelly and leading campaigner John Harris, who are aiming to get the appeal registered as a charity.

Kelly said: "The medication that Brooklyn has been put on to ease the discomfort caused by the condition has stopped working, so she is permanently agitated and hardly gets any sleep.

"We had to sit up with her and put her in the bath at about 4am the other morning to try and cool her down and she only had about half an hour's sleep all night.

"It is now just a case of waiting until we can get the appeal registered as a charity, which will really help and to see what our bigger fundraising events make.

"It is a slow process, but we are getting there. The level of support we have had has been huge, so now we are hoping that bigger companies in the area will get involved with the appeal.

"There is nothing that we can do at the moment but wait until we have enough money for the treatment, as there is nothing else that Brooklyn can be given to help her condition."

A number of events will be held to raise money for Brooklyn this month, including a fundraising night at McLean's Pub, Pentre on May 25 and a sponsored triathlon at Bala Lake on May 26.
