The brutal murder of a postman has cast a shadow over Mold for nearly six years – but now police say a reinvestigation of the case is already providing new leads.
Paul Savage, 30, was found bleeding to death in a driveway in Clayton Road, Mold Flintshire where he had been doing his round, on February 4, 2003.
The father-of-one had been viciously beaten and was pronounced dead at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital later that day.
No-one has ever been charged with his murder, but now, as the sixth anniversary of his death approaches, North Wales Police are appealing for the public to come forward to help bring those responsible to justice.
At a press conference today at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Detective Chief Superintendent Chris Corcoran urged anyone who may have been in the area at the time to cast their minds back and come forward with any information.
He said: "At 7.15am (that morning], Paul Savage had delivered mail to a house called 'Coleshill' on Clayton Road.
"Minutes later, two men, wearing hooded tops, were seen near to the postman's bike, which was leaning against one of the gate pillars, but there was no sign of the postman.
"It was only when the occupant of the house went to his car that he saw the body of Paul Savage lying on the snow covered pavement.
He had sustained serious head injuries and was unconscious."
DCS Corcoran said police received reports of a further sighting of the two men running down Clayton Road, away from the crime scene, towards the junction with Queens Park.
Two men of a similar description were also seen soon after the attack, in an alleyway running between Beech Drive, Cedar Grove and Elm Drive.
A dedicated team of 15 detectives, led by Detective Chief Inspector John Hanson, began a reinvestigation of the case today and will be targeting Mold in the hope that now, six years on, those who hold vital information will be more likely to come forward.
DCI Hanson said the team has already received information that could lead to new avenues of exploration in the case, as a direct result of press releases issued by the force last week.
Information has been re-released on one of the suspected murder weapons, a black wooden baton, which was recovered near to the scene of the crime.
Officers are also keen to gain more information on a white Sierra car that was seen in the area around the time of the attack.
DCS Corcoran said: "We know it is a long time ago, but we are asking people to cast their minds back and try and remember if they owned or were sold a car of that description around that time."
He added: "This murder has cast a shadow over Mold for the past six years and I am sure people will be relieved when justice is done, not just for the community, but for Mr Savage's family."
Anyone with any information about the case is asked to contact North Wales Police, in complete confidence, on 0845 607 1002, Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or visit the Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch team at Parkfields Community Centre, Mold.
