ROAD signs warning lorry drivers to ignore their satellite-navigation systems could be put up on country lanes around Flintshire if a pilot scheme is successful.
Signs have been put up in Gwernaffield, near Mold, and on the old Lloc-Whitford road on the outskirts of Holywell in a 12-month trial.

They urge drivers not to take the route suggested by their sat-navs as it would take them down winding country lanes not suitable for HGVs.

Dave Faulkner, head of highways at Flintshire Council, said: "We are trialling two signs on behalf of the Welsh Assembly, one in Gwernaffield and the other near Holywell.

"Both sites have experienced problems with large goods vehicles following sat-nav instructions only to encounter narrow lanes and bridges.

"We are hoping these signs will help minimise the impact of these large vehicles on narrow roads."

The sign in Gwernaffield is poorly sited. It is a fairly insignificant sign at a busy cross roads and is surrounded by a collection of other signs. It is unlikely that any HGV driver threading his way through the parked cars on that road will ever pick it up.
