POLICE rejected claims that a Flintshire town mayor attempted to claim back £17 in petrol expenses dishonestly.
North Wales Police has cleared Cllr Klaus Armstrong-Braun, chairman of Saltney Town Council, of any wrongdoing.
Cllr Armstrong-Braun put in the claim after driving to Connah's Quay and picking up the town council's mail, which had been re-directed by the former town clerk.
He was never paid the money.
At a recent town council meeting, members voted to refer claims that the mayor had attempted to "obtain council funds by deception" to police.
The motion was put forward by Cllr William Crawford, a strong opponent of Cllr Armstrong-Braun who has previously led calls for him to stand down as mayor.
Cllr Crawford had already been to Saltney Police Station to report the claims against Cllr Armstrong-Braun, but was unhappy with the response from police and called on the town council as a whole to ask police to investigate.
Cllr Crawford also claimed the mayor was never authorised by the council to go and collect post or open it.
But police say no offence has been committed, and that the matter is closed.
In a letter to the town council, south Flintshire Insp Alun Oldfield said: "A complaint of fraud was recently made to North Wales Police in relation to an allegation that Cllr Klaus Armstrong-Braun had fraudulently attempted to deceive Saltney Town Council by claiming mileage expenses.
"A full investigation has been carried out, which included a statement being recorded from the town clerk.
"We also received copies of Saltney Town Council minutes and the claim form has been reviewed.
"I can confirm that no criminal offences have been committed and unless anyone has further information to pass to North Wales Police, the matter is now closed."
Cllr Armstrong-Braun accused Cllr Crawford, and councillors who supported the motion, of wasting police time and bringing the council into disrepute.
He said: "There was nothing for the police to investigate in the first place. This was a malicious and vindictive plot against me, and it was meaningless."
