Members of the public across Wrexham and Flintshire have been advised to take extra care and to make sure they received regular updates on conditions on the roads, with flooding expected in places across North Wales.
Wales, along with south-west England, was expected to bear the brunt of the bad weather.
A Met Office spokesman said: "A deep depression is moving in from the Atlantic. Most of the UK will experience rain with the south-west and Wales being worst hit.
"By the end of the day there will be some localised flooding in places. The whole of Wales will get pretty heavy rain."
Emergency services and county councils were on standby to deal with any problems.
Denbighshire Council confirmed extra staff and sandbags had been brought in to minimise trouble.
A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said this morning that firefighters had had a quiet night, with no major weather-related call outs.
Forecasters say tonight will be mostly dry with clear spells, light winds and patchy mist. Elsewhere there will be showers or longer spells of rain, often heavy and perhaps thundery.
Saturday will see sunshine and scattered showers, with some of the rain heavy and slow moving. Cloud and outbreaks of rain may reach the far northwest later.
