A letter to the Evening Leader on how North Wales is treated by the Welsh Assembly has prompted a debate on whether Wrexham would by better off as part of England. An incredible suggestion perhaps, but what do you think?
The Evening Leader has received an email from an online reader who has suggested the differences between north and south Wales have become so great that the boundary should be changed making Wrexham part of England.

In the letter Wrexham resident, Mr T Roberts, wrote: "I think it is time we had a boundary change and we should become part of NW England.

"The Welsh Assembly appear to promote and develop only South Wales both in terms of money and news.

"North Wales hardly has a mention on Welsh television news bulletins.

"How many North Wales AMs have official positions in the Assembly? The proposed rail link from South to North just reiterates that Wrexham is not part of Wales.

"Wrexham with a population of 130,000 should pay our 'taxes and rates' to England and perhaps we would get the recognition we deserve."

Wrexham's Assembly Member Leslie Griffiths wholeheartedly disagreed with Mr Roberts' suggestion.

She said: "This is quite frankly a preposterous suggestion. By any measure you wish to choose - whether it be social, geographic, administrative, historical or linguistic - Wrexham is Welsh.

"It has always been in Wales and will always be in Wales.

"Wales is now a country of drive and ambition and Wrexham is playing a crucial part in creating this new found confidence in our country and in our identity. Why on earth would anyone want to sacrifice that?"

However, some members of the public the Evening Leader spoke to agreed with Mr Roberts' proposal for a boundary change.

Arthur Roberts, 82, from Trevor said: "It doesn't matter what happens it's always South Wales that gets it, never the North. I don't believe in the Assembly anyway.

"It's just 'money for the boys.' What do they do for us?

"We managed all those years being governed from Westminster why can't we manage now?

"I think the whole of the UK should be one, no Welsh Assembly or Scottish Parliament."

Steve Evans, 25, from Wrexham, said: "I've been to South Wales recently and there is definitely a lot more money spent down there. You can see it in the sports facilities, the Millenium Stadium, the architecture.

"I do feel Wrexham misses out on these on these things and I think we should be part of England. Look at Chester. It's only a few miles away but seems to be doing a lot better."

So what do you think - would Wrexham benefit from becoming part of England?

It is a ludicrous suggestion. The issue of the Welsh Assembly showing bias to the South may be worthy of further discussion through your relevant AM if you feel alienated. However to suggest Wrexham become part of England is absurd. Many people in the area value and hold dear their Welsh roots and are very patriotic. If you feel so strongly that England has better service then perhaps you should move over the border than spouting insane ideas.

If you check out GOOGLE Weather for us it says "Wrexham, England" so perhaps the boundaries have changed already!
Everything is geared around South Wales, with the North always being treated second best but any suggestion of us becoming English is just idiotic.
If anything, the North is far more Welsh than the anglicised South. Take a look at history, at the Welsh revolts against English rule. Where was South Wales? Tucked up in bed with the English!

Wrexham should be part of England?
What a stupid idea, if that ever happens I'm moving.
I agree about the Welsh Assembly being all for the south. But that is something for the North Wales AM's to sort out.

There is a debate in Berwick and Carlisle about going into Scotland because of the tons of English gold that is sent to Scotland every week. I can see no reason why other border areas such as Wrexham and Monmouth can not discuss these issues as well.

Of course Wrexham should join the new England that is about to shake off the shackles of Britain. We have to thank Brown/Blair for our re -awakening. Once liberated, English money will be for England and the English, hopefully the EU will be given the same boot as the Scots.
Wales will have to fend for itself and I know where I would rather be once England starts saying 'England for the English'and English buy English products and employ English people as do the 'convenience members' of Britain.
The English people of Monmouthshire that were hijacked into Wales in 1974 need now to throw off the stupid Psuedo 'Celtish' identity and come back home to England.

Yachydda,

Wrexham was never part of England, so what's to return to?
Wrexham is 100% Welsh.
If you want to live in England then its only a couple of miles away to the east, just the other side of the river Dee.
Wrexham has always been Welsh and will always be Welsh.

have your say,

Wrexham's neighbours, Oswestry, have a similar but opposite problem.

Oswestry is very much on the border, and some people think they would benefit from the advantages of being under a Welsh authority, so they would be better off if they 'moved' to Wales.

But there is definitely an issue of a North/South divide in Wales, with North Wales playing second fiddle to the south.

wrexham is in wales and should stay welsh. perhaps a better idea is that some of the people who live here should wander off and live in england. i think if the people in wrexham showed a bit more pride in their town - stopped litterring and making the place look an eyesore then the assembly might invest more money in us. come on gt real - who is going to pour money into an area that will just trash whatever is created.

Mr. F. Edup.,

The idea is rediculous. Why not just do away with the border and call Wales West England?
I was born 2.5 miles on the Welsh side of the border so I am Welsh and will remain so.

I do think that Liverpool should be broken away from England though. Perhaps make it part of the far East.
