WREXHAM MP Ian Lucas is calling on the Government to consider a radical change to the Union Jack to incorporate the Welsh flag for the first time.
The change, which was proposed by Mr Lucas in a House of Commons debate last night, would involve the combination of the Ddraig Goch or Red Dragon, from the current Welsh flag, with the Union Jack flag.

Mr Lucas told the Commons the change would reflect the changing status of Wales in Britain and he believed it could "increase the recognition of Wales, not just across the United Kingdom but across the world".

Speaking after the debate, he said: "As I told the House, this is not just a dry constitutional issue, indeed, I am aware the politics of flags can stir some strong emotions.

"I am also keenly aware there is a school of thought in Wales which means people do not feel the Union Jack represents them.

"I hope my proposal will mean those people feel that their concerns are being listened to, that the new constitutional arrangements in the UK are marked, and most of all, there is a wide-ranging debate on the Union Jack and what it means in Wales and the UK."

What do you think of the new design - would you like to see it become the National Flag?

The Union Flag

The term Union Flag refers to the national flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is also known as the Union Jack.

The current design dates from the Union of Ireland and Great Britain in 1801.

The Union Flag incorporates the red cross on a white background of St George, for England; the white saltire cross on a blue background for Scotland, and the red saltire cross of St Patrick's Flag for Irealnd.

The Welsh Dragon is not represented because Wales was not a separate principlaity when the first Union Flag was created in 1606.

What planet is Ian Lucas on? English first anouncements at our railway station and now this. We don't want to be on the union flag, we have our own thanks very much and it looks much better!

his heart is in the right place, but the design is awful. The flag is representative, because of what it is, not why it is. Nevermind the stripes and colours, this is the British flag and Wales is part of Britain. People who get hung up on this sort of meaningless nonesense are missing the point.

yes the welsh dragon should be included but its to prominent as a representation also its just a stunt lets see if this ever happens, perhaps mps should be elected by what they deliver

This is an idea more suited to April 1st. The union flag is OK as it is, We simply do not need a Dragon or whatever else incorporated into it to know we are part of the Union. Let us be proud of what we already have.

This is a ludicrous idea by a person who as (Richard Brunstrom says) was parachuted into a safe Welsh Labour seat. What Ian Lucas doesn't understand is that the majority of Welsh people don't care about the Union flag all we care about is our own beatiful unique flag. What we need to do is to abolish this old symbol of empire and replace it with the St George/St Andrew and the Ddraig Goch. It also begs the question hasn't Ian Lucas got nothing better to do. As for the EL poll I've never seen such a parochial poll...you're damned if you do and damned if you don't, let's have a third question about whether people prefer the Ddraig Goch.

I think of myself as being both Welsh and British, and whilst I think it would be nice for Wales to have a little more recognition both nationally and internationally, this flag is ridiculous. Mr. Lucas could do with concentrating on issues that really matter, instead of fussing over something as petty as this.

Does Chav Beater know who he really is, the flag is for England, he's British and he's from Fflint...doesn't that say it all...confused or what!
