The Wrexham parents of a four-year-old girl killed in a tragic accident involving a television set have paid tribute to their daughter.
The youngster, named as Emily Hughes, was fatally injured at around 6.20pm on Wednesday December 24, at the property in Coedpoeth, Wrexham, when a television, being carried by her father, fell on her.

She was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, but doctors could not save her and she died on Christmas Day.

In a statement released by North Wales Police on behalf of the family, Emily's parents Louise and Robert said: "Emily May Hughes died as a result of a tragic accident at her home in Christmas Eve.

"She was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital where the staff and the paramedics were fantastic. She was transferred to Alder Hey Childrens Hospital and arrived there around midnight, where she was in intensive care.

"The staff were very professional and did everything they could to help. We'd like to say particular thanks to Dr Jane Ratcliffe and her team at Alder Hey.

"Emily passed away at twenty past ten on Christmas Day evening with her parents at her bedside.

"Emily was the youngest of four children, and went to Penygelli School and to the Salvation Army Sunday School in Coedpoeth, which family members have attended for years. Major Gill Stacey from the Salvation Army has given enormous support at a difficult time.

"Emily is part of a large, well known local family here in Coedpoeth, her mother Louise has worked as a youth worker here for ten years. We'd like to thank everyone for their support, including phone calls from round the world, flowers and cards. The funeral, on a date to be arranged, will be a celebration of her life.

"Emily was a bright, clever girl, well liked by everybody, caring and kind. She had a real talent for singing, and had done solos in the school concert just before Christmas.

"We will miss her, and will never forget her."

A spokeswoman for North Wales Police called the incident a "very sad and tragic accident"

She added the inquiry has now been handed to the north east Wales coroner's office.

A councillor for the area where the family live, Mark Davies, said: "I'm still not aware of the full details but obviously when a child has lost their life everyone's thoughts go out to the family.

"I'm sure the whole community's thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. It's especially sad at this time of year."

Cllr Gareth Griffiths said the tragedy had shaken vilage residents.

"The village is absolutely devastated. There is a sense of total disbelief among people that something like this could have happened.

"We are a close-knit community and we will rally round. There is deep sympathy for Emily's family. So many people have been upset by this tragedy," said Cllr Griffiths.

Emily had been a member of Coedpoeth Playgroup for 12 months until she reached three-and-a-half. Supervisor Hazel Edwards said that she was a lovely girl who was very popular.

"We are deeply shocked. Emily has a lovely family and all our thoughts are with them at this time," she added.
