THIRTY-EIGHT schools across Wrexham county are set to be disrupted by a teachers' strike over pay on Thursday.
The strike comes after members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Europe's largest teaching union, voted three to one in favour of strike action.

The dispute is over the Government's planned pay increase for teachers of 2.45 per cent, below the current rate of inflation at 4.1 per cent.

Two rallies will be held in Wales, one in Cardiff and one in Wrexham at the Guildhall at 12.30pm, where the main speaker will be NUT national executive member Neil Foden.

Communications officer for NUT Cymru, Rhys Williams, said: "We're concerned that teachers' spending power, particularly in areas of Wales, on housing, fuel and food has been greatly eroded over the last few years.

"Fuel is an important issue in Wales where people have to travel some distances to work and teachers are no exception.

"The 2.45 per cent increase the Government has offered is really exploiting teachers' goodwill and we're very concerned that teachers' wages are going to fall back over the next few years so there's considerable feeling in Wales about this."

Not all schools will be closed because some teachers are members of different unions, which also means some schools are open to certain classes but not others.
