Tragic death of Wrexham toddler
A WREXHAM school community is in shock after the death of a "bright and happy" toddler.
Jasmine Grace Harper, of Weale Court in Hightown, was rushed to Wrexham Maelor Hospital last Tuesday but died when she did not respond to treatment.
The three-year-old had been a pupil at the nursery of Barker's Lane Primary School since September. Yesterday the school paid tribute to the toddler they said was a "very bright and lovely little girl."
Headteacher Helen Andrews told the Evening Leader that the popular toddler was very kind and caring.
She said: "We remember Jasmine as a bright and happy little girl, who was kind and thoughtful and very caring to her nursery friends."
The head said that staff and pupils had been upset by the news of the toddler's death and were receiving appropriate support from the teaching staff, school nurse and NightingaleHouse.
She added that the children had sent cards and tributes to Jasmine's parents, Gareth Harper and Lisa Wade, and a special assembly had been held for the older children in her memory.
Mrs Andrews added: "On behalf of the whole school community we send our heartfelt condolences and support to the family and parents who are devastated by their loss."
Tributes from other members of the community also flooded in.
Borras Park councillor Jim Kelly has close links with the school and said the news of the toddler's death had been an "awful shock."
He said: "Words are inadequate at a time like this. It's about being there and letting people grieve in there own way and time.
"It's so sad especially in a little child that is just starting out in life. No one can know the pain the parents must feel.
"I know the school will be very supportive of the parents and the other little children who are very aware of the sadness."
Chief learning and achievement officer for Wrexham Council, Hywyn Williams, said: "The loss of a child is always a very difficult time for family, friends and the whole school community.
"We are of course offering every available support to the school to help during this very difficult period. We offer our sincerest condolences to Jasmine's family during this very sad time."
A spokesman for North East Wales Coroner John Hughes said that the cause of Jasmine's death was unknown and that a post mortem was to be carried out, followed by an inquest.
