THE death of a "popular and much-loved" teenager from Flintshire, who was a front seat passenger in a car crash, was accidental, an inquest heard.
Jessica Ward, 19, of Llys-y-Fron, Mold, died at the Walton Centre neurology hospital on January 15, after suffering serious head injuries in a crash near Nercwys nine days earlier.

At an inquest into her death, her father, Douglas Ward, said: "Jessie was a lovely, bubbly person and she was so kind and caring.

"The most important things in her life were her family and friends.

"Jessie loved socialising and going out dancing and clubbing. She loved animals and always had pets and she wanted to study to be a veterinary nurse."

Miss Ward, who worked as a shop assistant at Max Spielmann in Mold, was the front-seat passenger in a Renault Clio driven by her friend, Samantha Hughes, when the crash happened just after 5pm on January 6.

The pair had left Miss Ward's home and gone out for a drive and to talk.

They were travelling along an unclassified road just past a skip recycling facility near Nercwys, when they came across a moped travelling in the opposite direction, on a bend in the road.

When interviewed by police, Miss Hughes said that she had not seen the moped approaching and was travelling at about 40mph when she came across it on the bend and she swerved to avoid it.

In her statement, she said that the moped had been travelling on her side of the road.

Conflicting evidence was read out from the rider of the moped, 17-year-old Theo Jones, of Mold, who was found hanged in his bedroom on March 10.

Mr Jones, who had been travelling in the opposite direction, claimed that he saw Miss Hughes's car travelling towards him quite fast and that it was about two feet over on his side of the road.

He said that when the car was a few feet away from him, he saw its tyres move suddenly to the left and it carried on past him. He then described hearing a screech, turning around and seeing the car roll over about four or five times, landing on its wheels in the middle of the road.

Witness Robert Whitfield, who had been travelling in his car behind Mr Jones, said: "I saw a car, which was about six foot in the air, bouncing towards my car. The driver's side of my car went dark and I was sure that it was going to hit me.

"It broke off my wing mirror and then I heard a bang as it crashed into the back of my car on the driver's side."

Mr Whitfield said that he then got out of his car and saw Miss Hughes getting out of her car, clearly upset and screaming. He then looked into the passenger seat of the Clio and saw Miss Ward, who had her head slumped forward and was unconscious, and he called the emergency services.

Police investigation officers said that as Mr Whitfield did not actually see what happened before Miss Hughes lost control of her car, there were no independent witnesses to verify her version or the events Mr Jones described.

They said that they could not rule out the possibility that both vehicles had been travelling on the wrong side of the road and that it was not possible to determine exactly what happened.

Miss Ward was cut free from the wreckage of the car by firefighters and was rushed to Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

She was transferred to Walton in the early hours of the next morning.

Doctors were unable to contain the swelling on her brain and as a result she suffered multiple organ failure and died with her family at her bedside.

A tearful Mr Ward said: "Her death has left a massive hole in our lives that can never be filled."

Miss Ward, a former pupil at Leeswood CP School, Castell Alun High School, and St Richard Gwyn School, also left behind mum Alison Broadhurst and stepfather Tony, sister Sarah, 22 and baby niece Lexy.

North East Wales coroner John Hughes recorded a verdict of accidental death.
