Turn street lights off to 'chill out' says Flintshire mayor

A TOWN mayor who says he can't "chill out" wants Flintshire to become the third county in Wales to switch off non-essential street lights at night.
Cllr Klaus Armstrong Braun, the mayor of Saltney and county councillor for Saltney Mold Junction, says the move would help people and wildlife to relax.
He also claims it would cut the council's energy costs and help to protect the environment.
Powys and Pembrokeshire have already adopted the policy, and Cllr Armstrong-Braun has tabled a motion calling on Flintshire to do the same.
He said: "This has been done elsewhere, but my motion is a lot more in-depth and comprehensive than in Powys and Pembrokeshire.
"No one can chill out any more. The street lights mean birds think it's always daytime, and people can't chill out either. I know I can't."
Cllr Armstrong Braun's motion, calling for a review of the use of highway and street lighting, is due to be considered in the New Year.
He argues that lights can be switched off at times when they are not needed for public safety.
As an example, he cites the footpath between St David's Terrace and Mainwaring Drive in Saltney Ferry.
"The lighting is on there all through the dark hours when, after about 11pm, the path is only used by people who cause vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
"That lighting could be switched off, in my opinion, at about 10pm", he said.
Last month, Powys began extinguishing 9,380 of its 14,000 street lights, but the decision has proved controversial.
Pembrokeshire councillors say the move will save about £213,000 a year.
Flintshire Council said last month it has no immediate plans to adopt the policy, but would be "watching with interest what happens in Powys and in other UK local authorities".
Is Cllr Klaus Armstrong Braun right, should street lights be turned off?
