VANDALS caused more than £1,000 worth of damage in a wrecking spree at a Buckley football ground.
The attack on Buckley Town FC's Globe Way home saw dugouts destroyed, windows smashed and part of a stand torn down.

Chairman Allan Brown said: "Kids have totally destroyed the ground. The place has been smashed to smithereens.

"We have put lots of hard work in, trying to make a great ground for the people of Buckley and now it's been destroyed by a few idiots. It's heartbreaking, really."

The ground is home to the Cymru Alliance outfit, as well as youth and community teams, and has also played host to Wrexham FC's reserve team for the past season.

It was vandalised overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The away team and fourth official's dugouts were destroyed with a plank of wood, while the windows in the clubhouse were smashed with bricks. The side wall of one of the stands was also torn down.

Mr Brown, who has been involved with the club for more than 30 years, arrived at the ground on Wednesday morning to discover the damage and immediately called the police. He said: "We've had no trouble for the whole season, but it seems to have started up again now.

"The damage will cost more than £1,000 to repair and that will have to come out of club funds.

"We haven't got much money, but we will have to get it from somewhere. At the minute, I've got no idea how we're going to pay for it."

Fortunately, a new £15,000 stand which opened in February was not damaged in the incident.

Mr Brown said police forensics team attended the ground yesterday to examine beer cans left at the scene.

A North Wales Police spokesman said: "If anybody saw or heard anything we would ask them to contact PC Victoria Land on 0845 607 1002 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
