EXPERTS have warned that a second generation of workers and their families could be exposed to asbestos if businesses fail to identify the substance on their premises.

The dangers of exposure to asbestos will be highlighted to business owners at a special workshop in Wrexham.

Bersham based Safety and Training Solutions Ltd is running the workshop on Friday November 2 to tell employers and property owners of their responsibility to protect staff, contractors and visitors from asbestos.

Alex Fairclough from SATS said: "More than 3,000 people die from asbestos related diseases every year and that figure will continue to rise until 2011.

"The majority of business premises built before the 1980s will contain asbestos in some form.

"It is vital that all businesses conduct an asbestos survey to ensure any of the substance is removed if dangerous or effectively managed and clearly labelled if intact."

Asbestos was widely used in the construction industry until its ban in the 1980s.

It is commonly found in lagging, structural fire protection and cement based materials such as corrugated roofing sheets.

Continued exposure to asbestos dust causes asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
