A DELEGATION from Wrexham Council is making a one-day visit to Belgium today as a first step towards looking into the possibility of cleaning up the Llwyneinion acid tar lagoon in Rhos.
The delegation from Wrexham will visit a similar site currently being cleaned up by DEME Environmental Contractors.

The aim is to gain a fuller understanding of the issues and potential problems involved with the operation.

Late last year repr
esentatives from DEME gave a presentation to Wrexham Council on its experiences in dealing with sites like Llwyneinion.

Wrexham Council leader Aled Roberts said the fact finding mission will involve taking a close look at the situation on site, and having discussions with the company and members of the Belgian environmental authorities.

Cllr Roberts said it was likely a report would be drawn up and consultations held with the community.

However, he stressed that even if it was found that a clean up of Llwyneinion was feasible there was no quick fix solution.

There were many issues which would have to be addressed, a key one being finance.

"We have to temper any expectations. The matter of who would bear the costs of any clean-up operation, should they be able to go ahead, would have to be sorted out," emphasised Cllr Roberts.

When it comes to money talk and costs, Wrexham council always shy away.
Well councillor Roberts could start by taking a pay cut for his part time job... that would help. or will this post be removed because someone wants some real answers.
Wrexham council is skimping millions of pounds out of its budget, and none of it is earmarked for the things its supposed to be for.
This tar pit has to be cleared, and wrexham council will not pay for it, but i see that Councillors are considering another pay rise.
This town is a dump and the fault lies with Wrexham council and its Greedy uncareing unhelpfull councillors.

Really didn't need 2 Councillors to go on a jolly did it? This article fails to mention that Lead Member Bithell also had to go!
What a carve up and it's with our money! Bargain!

Yachydda,

And they wonder why they had a unanimous vote of NO confidence.
ever heard of video confrencing?
ever heard of telephones?
oh sorry did i say something you did not like?
Lets face it, Wrexham council is here for Wrexham councillors... not the people of Wrexham, or the people of Rhos, I suggest we take a deep look into why they get so much and the people get so little.
Millions of pounds saved?... no its not saved money its stolen money stolen from services such as environmental, council housing, road repairs, and the dissabled.
and its used to send councillors on an unnessesary trip that could have been delt with over the phone.
take it our of there allowance, its exsesive.

This is just ridiculous! When everyone else is feeling the pinch, Aled Roberts and his cronies are going on an expensive junket like this? Disgraceful!
This trip should involve council officers only. They should go to Belgium and report back to councillors on their findings and then make a decision. What is going on at the Guildhall? No wonder our our council tax bills are so high!

Going against other contributers, but why can't this site be left alone?

It's been proven to NOT be a 'contaminated site' and nature is doing a very fine job of taking it back. Rare funghi, crested newts and badgers all thrive there.

For nearly 30 years this site has sat undisturbed. The land adjacent to the pool was only fenced last year as a knee jerk reaction - it had previously been left open to all for over a quarter of a century, yet now we are being told to fear it. Paranoia over facts?

To recover this site would mean years of construction traffic and plant, noise and dust. It has been suggested industrial plant would be built on site to process the material - does this then mean Llwyneinion would then become a centre to process waste from other sites too? The road network would also need upgrading (WCBC have finally just declared the road unsuitable for HGVs)

Reclamation companies / local government wont spend money on the site unless they see some kind of return. If this site is cleared, then someone will find a use for it.

So, the prospect of yet more overdevelopment or maybe even another Hafod tip, big holes in the ground can prove rather profitable round here...

Llocal,Llwyneinion :

What you say appears to be true.
Why is it that Cllr Roberts sees this as his chance of wasteing even more of taxpayers monies?

The local community council has had its fun, they care more for what they can waste instead of what they can save. this trip should be halted or should be paid for by the cllrs not the people.
When is Cllr Roberts and his bunch of no good flunkies going to listen to the people of Wrexham?
We want answers and all he gives is GRUNTS.

Do people actually do any work here or spend all day having a pop at the council? No one really knows any facts about the tar pool yet. And I guarantee the cost won't be anywhere near the £100 million being quoted by some people in the media.

To Cpt_Charisma, Wrexham 09/01/2009 14:01:57

Contents of the tar pool, fullers earth, and other areas have now been examined and its known whats in them.

I expect it wont cost £100 million, but it will cost tens of millions that WCBC doesn't have.

And as for having a pop at the council. They work for us and the councillors represent us, I'd say we're entitled to express our opinion if we feel they are losing sight of our best interests (and with joys of the internet we can do this at any time of the day)
