AN ELDERLY man died after a being run down by his own car as he tried to rev the engine, an inquest heard.
Dr Matthew Gavin Mason, of Fir Grove Corner, Wrexham, was knocked down by his silver Ford Focus in the car park of Borras Park Road shops in Wrexham.

The 84-year-old had been trying to reverse the car out of its parking space but couldn't because of a problem with the clutch.

He was leaning on the car, with one foot on the accelerator, when it suddenly shot backwards and knocked him over.

The accident happened on October 22 last year and Dr Mason, a retired college lecturer, died eight days later at Wrexham Maelor Hospital from complications.

An inquest was held today (Monday) in Flint and North East Wales coroner John Hughes recorded a verdict of accidental death. The cause of death was given as aspiration pneumonia.
