A Wrexham village community will today say its final goodbyes to a four-year-old girl who died in a tragic Christmas Eve accident.
Emily Hughes, of Coed- poeth, died on Christmas Day after her father accidentally dropped a television set on her as he walked downstairs with it on the previous evening.

Her funeral takes place at St Tydfil's Church, in Coedpoeth, this morning.

Parents, Rob and Louise, have said they want the occasion to be a celebration of Emily's life.

A coroner at an inquest on Monday described the accident as "every parent's worst nightmare".

The inquest was told how Robert Hughes, Emily's father, accidentally dropped an old television set onto his daughter as she lay, unbeknown to him, at the foot of their stairs.

The family had bought a new TV on Christmas Eve, and a police report described how Mr Hughes accidentally bumped into his daughter, lost his balance, and dropped the "heavy, deep and bulky" old set on top of her.

The inquest heard how Mr Hughes carried Emily into the kitchen and with his wife Louise tried to resuscitate her until paramedics arrived.

The little girl was rushed first to Wrexham Maelor Hospital and later transferred to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, where she died the next
day after suffering a "catastrophic brain injury."

Recording a verdict of accidental death, coroner Andrew Rebello said: "It is every parent's worst nightmare for their child's funeral to take place before their own.

"I hope the family can recover from this tragedy and celebrate the joy of Emily's life."

Emily had attended Penygelli School and also went to the Salvation Army Sunday School in Coedpoeth.

In a statement, her parents said: "We'd like to thank everyone for their support, including phone calls from round the world, flowers and cards. The funeral... will be a celebration of her life.

"Emily was a bright, clever girl, well liked by everybody, caring and kind. She had a real talent for singing, and had done solos in the school concert just before Christmas.

"We will miss her, and will never forget her."

Coedpoeth county councillor Mark Davies said the community would come together to do all it could for the family.

"It is obviously a time when the family will need the support of all those closest to them and I believe the Coedpoeth community, like many communities in Wrexham, is a very supportive community," he said.

"Whatever the family need they will get from individuals and
organisations in the village."

Jonathan Griffiths,

Manchester/Abergele 02/01/2009 15:58:25
Robert, Louise and family, I hope you get to read these messages of condolence and I hope you find some comfort at this very difficult time, I have only just heard about Emily and my heart screamed out for you, on December 9th 1998, I had an accident at home with my 16week old son, resulting in an horrific head injury, it was the worst day of my life and still pains me, so I can sympathise with you both wholeheartedly, my little boy, Paul, has recovered thanks to the amazing doctors and nurses, and I sometimes feel very guilty when I hear stories from other people whose little angels didn't recover. I hope your pain eases as soon as possible and I hope you get all the help you need, please accept any counselling help which is offered, you cannot go through a time like this by yourself. God bless you and your family, sleep tight Emily. Jonathan (and Paulypoo) Griffiths.
