LOCAL politics is often the preserve of an older generation – but one newly elected councillor is hoping to change all that.
At 22, Brymbo councillor Paul Rogers is one of the youngest county councillors to be given the vote of confidence in Wrexham.

His political career began when he studied law at Aberystwyth.

Mr Rogers, a Conservative, took an interest in the students' union where he met a number of Conservative politicians, including Welsh leader Nick Bourne.

In last Friday's local elections he triumphed over Labour's Nigel Davies and former Brymbo councillor Mike Shone to take his seat on the county council, winning 365 of the votes cast.

He believes the key reason people voted for him was because of his interest in developing community facilities.

He said: "I want to support anyone who wants to get involved in the community and make a difference in the village. I have already had a few people approach me about developing Scouts and Guides in the area.

"I would urge anyone who wants to set up a youth club or community group or sports group to get in touch."

Despite his age, Mr Rogers think his previous political experience will stand him in good stead.

As chairman of the youth party in Wales, Conservative Future, he is keen to get younger constituents involved.

He said: "I've always been interested in standing for county council since I stood for the regional assembly elections last year.

"Being from Brymbo I know the area and a the people well. I think they felt the need for a bit of a change and as a young person I feel Wrexham Council needs a younger representative. I think we need to involve young people in the political process and make them feel part of the community.

"It's often the case that young people distance themselves and that's because they don't understand the process.

"I will certainly be pushing things that affect younger people, leisure, sports and recreation. Those areas need more attention in my opinion. They could be funded better and there is room for improvement.

"At a more local level in Brymbo, there is a need for more regeneration. The new housing development is nearly finished and there are a lot of new faces in the village.

"It's about integration of the community.

"I will also be pushing for the new road between Brymbo and Tanyfron. Once that goes we can push for the regeneration of the steelworks and attract investment into the village."

Mr Rogers said he had been overwhelmed by the response from other councillors and politicians on his new position.

He said: "I have got a very good response so far. People have been really positive and said they are glad a younger person has got involved. All the other county councillors have been excellent and I've spoken to many experienced councillors who have given me advice and support and told me about the ongoing issues.

"Obviously experience will grow over time."
