Wrexham's 'oldest teenager' does parachute jump for 70th birthday

A Wrexham man celebrated his 70th birthday by doing a parachute jump for charity.
Daredevil Brian Halley took part in a tandem jump at Tilstock, in Whitchurch.
Every year Brian and a friend, John Wiggan, undertake a charity walk to raise funds for two good causes – Wrexham and District Phab Club, part of a national charity dedicated to the integration of people with physical disabilities in the community, and the Ghurka Welfare Trust.
Last year more than £3,000 was raised for Phab through a two-day sponsored walk from Southport to Widnes.
This year, the planned walk had to be called off because of ill health on John's part, but Brian decided to do something on his own.
He paid the costs of the 250,000ft jump, so that all the money raised would go directly to the two charities.
He said: "It was brilliant, a dream of a lifetime come true and I was also raising money for the Phab club and Ghurkas' trust at the same time.
"I wasn't nervous at all. I was more hyper.
"All my friends and family were there watching in the viewing area and they kitted me all up beforehand and I was given my helmet and gloves so I could go and mingle with everyone.
"It took about 15 minutes to get up to two miles in a tiny little plane.
"I was sat at the edge of the door and looking down and all you could see were clouds. The man who was filming it was hanging out of the door ready to film and he said "don't hang about, my arm's getting tired'."
"So on the word 'go', I just had to throw myself out head first.
"You freefall for about 30 seconds at about 120 mph, which is astonishing, as you can imagine.
"Then you're just floating down looking at the world around you for another four minutes. It's fantastic.
"When we landed, all my family and friends came running across the airfield and I punched the air because I had done it."
But Brian admitted that the reality of what he had done began to sink in afterwards.
He added: "I was quite cool, calm and collected, but when I watched the video back, I was more nervous.
"It brought it all back and I thought what was I doing!"
He said of his family and friends: "They all thought I was bonkers.
"My daughter was all for it, but my son was a bit more worried about the consequences.
"But the instructors are competent and give you a full briefing. You put yourself in their hands.
"My grandchildren think I'm a character because I do all the things that other grandparents don't.
"But I'm 70. I'm allowed to do outrageous things. I'm still 15 years-old in the head. I'm Wrexham's oldest teenager!"
Any cheques sponsoring Mr Halley's jump should be sent to fundraiser John Wiggan, 7 Rossett Way, Little Acton, Wrexham, LL12 8AT.
