THE long, nervous wait came to an end for hundreds of youngsters across Wrexham today as this year's GCSE results were finally revealed.
Pupils and staff at Ysgol y Grango, in Rhos, had reason to be proud after the school was named the most improved in the whole county.
A total of 97 per cent of pupils achieved GCSE success from a relatively small year group.
Fifty two pupils – or 68 per cent – achieved five higher grade passes or the equivalent or more.
Headteacher Karen Evans said: "We are delighted with the results of the year group. This group has faced a number of challenges over the last few years, and has faced each one with maturity, respect and consideration.
"I would like to congratulate all our pupils on their individual achievements and wish them well in the future."
Ysgol Rhiwabon's headteacher Angela Williams was delighted to report that year 11 had exceeded the challenging target set by Wrexham LEA.
A total of 43 per cent of the pupils gained at least 5 A* to C grades, an increase of six per cent on the previous year.
The success extended through all abilities with 87 per cent of the group gaining at least 5 A* to G grades and 97per cent gaining at least one GCSE. The school's core subject indicator also improved by 10 per cent.
A number of pupils included A* and A grades in their successes; the most notable were Bethan Roberts with 10 A* and A grades and one B, Chris Jones with eight A* and A grades and three Bs. Others with significant numbers of A* and A grades were Robert Hughes, Simeon Holland, Sally Bottomley, Rebekah Butler, Kathryn Williams, Lee Holman and Lauren Mates.
Mrs Williams said: "As a school, we have worked hard with pupils and their parents.
"These results are just reward for them and, of course, their teachers. We look forward to welcoming most of them back when they join our sixth form in September."
There were mixed emotions at Ysgol Bryn Alyn, Gwersyllt, where Craig Owen's parents collected their son's grades posthumously. The much-loved and popular 16-year-old died on Sunday, August 3, after becoming trapped under tonnes of sand while playing in a sand tunnel at Cefn Sidan beach in Carmarthenshire.
At Ysgol Dinas Bran, in Llangollen, 99 per cent of pupils attained GCSE passes.
Outstanding results were posted by Hollie Manuel, who got seven A*s, three As and a B, Charlotte Whitworth, with six A*s, four As and two Bs, and Anna Davies with five A*s, six As, and a B.
Headteacher Alison Duffy said: "All of our pupils strived hard to achieve their excellent grades.
