ALYN and Deeside MP Mark Tami has blasted energy companies for double-digit increases in gas prices to customers.
Mr Tami said he had received assurances from the Chancellor that the Government would be pressing for a review of the reasons behind the gas price rises in an attempt to ease the burden on consumers, after power giants npower increased prices in a move expected to be replicated by other firms.

Mr Tami said: "In order to achieve stable energy prices we have to look at diversifying energy supplies.

"In the meantime, efforts are under way at the highest level to reign in energy suppliers who could be profiteering from reduced gas production."

Npower claim wholesale energy price rises are to blame for the increases, which have added to gas and electricity bills across the region.

A company statement said: "Since mid-February 2007, electricity wholesale costs for 2008 have increased by 66 per cent and gas by 60 per cent."

The company also pointed to increased distribution and transmission costs.

Its probably true to say that energy companies will still make many millions of pounds in excess profits, but it wont be as much as they normally make, and if they do, then they should be made to hand back some of that back to the customer, its not the energy companies that are to blame overall though, the government could scrap the tax on heating fuels for the period of high prices, and reintroduce them when times are better... but you can bet your last new penny they will not even consider it.

Mr Jones,

With todays Energy Companies we are seeing a modern version of highway robbery. They are holding customers quite literally to ransom. All the public utility companies should never have been privatised for all we have today is sham competition and a new monopoly by stealth.
