ATHLETICS - Big weekend ahead for Olympic trialists
SEVERAL locally-based athletes will line up for the Olympic Trials at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium this weekend.
Saughall sprinter Lucy Evans, will represent Sale Harriers Manchester on the back of winning both the 100m and 200m titles at last month's Welsh Championships.
The Welsh international will travel to the event full of confidence after posting a series of pleasing performances so far this season.
Wrexham-born Faye Harding, who is currently based at Loughborough University, will take her place in the 400m, while Wrexham AC duo James Mills and Rebecca Jones will compete in the 800m and high jump respectively.
Mills is currently a student at Bath University, and Jones, who represented Wales in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, is a former British Under 20 high jump champion.
Wrexham-born Laura Douglas, a former Deeside AAC member, will be representing Sale Harriers Manchester and will be hoping to power her way to a new personal best in the hammer.
Chester-based Charlotte Roach will represent Vale Royal in the 1500m after winning a team gold in last winter's European Junior Cross Country Championships.
And West Cheshire AC's Dave McKay will be attempting to launch himself to a new personal best in the javelin after hitting the 70m mark earlier in the season.
Among the star names in Birmingham will be Welsh sprinter, Christian Malcolm, currently ranked fourth over the 200m in the UK, who will need to break into the top three if he is to secure an individual spot. But Wales also has another realistic opportunity for Olympic selection in Tim Abeyie.
Fresh from setting a lifetime best and making the Olympic A qualifying standard of 20.57 at the British League in Eton last weekend, Abeyie – who is now ranked above Malcolm in third position in the UK – has his mind firmly set on impressing the selectors.
Malcolm will also have relay hopes after assisting the British 100m quartet to gold at the European Cup in Annecy last month.
Welsh hopes in the women's throws rest with Philippa Roles. The Swansea Harrier has already achieved the 'A' standard of 61m on two occasions but will need to put in another solid performance in order to guarantee her ticket to Beijing.
With Rhys Williams out of contention due to a fractured bone in his foot, 400m hurdling hopes rest on David Greene of Swansea. The European Under 23 champion is eyeing the A standard of 49.20. His season best stands at 49.79 and he sits second on the UK rankings. But with five hurdlers having run sub 51 seconds this season, the race will be on to impress the selectors.
The Welsh Talent Development Academy will be fielding Chris Gowell (Swansea) and Pontypridd's Joe Thomas in the 800m.
Gowell will be going head-to-head against training partner and Cardiff-based runner Richard Hill who will be looking to hit the Olympic A standard. Meanwhile, promising Carmarthen athlete, Caryl Granville, will be going in the 400m hurdles.
