WREXHAM'S David Blower produced a fantastic performance in the 800m to take victory at the Welsh Schools Cup Final in Brecon.
The Penley Maelor pupil recorded a time of 2:18.4 to blow away the rest of the field, and it was Maelor pupils who produced some of the best performances of the meet.

In the under 14s competition, Dylan Gallanders managed 13.2 seconds to take silver in the 100m. He also took second place in the triple jump with 10.27m.

David Bowie clinched silver in the 200m with a time of 26.1 while Andy Myres then continued the Penley Maelor success with second place in the shot put with 9.65m.

Hywel Bennett recorded a well-earned third place in the under-16s 800m boys in a time of 2:13.3 and Harry Powell took fifth in the under-14 boys 1500m competition with a time of 5:13.1 seconds.

Other credible performances from Penley Maelor school came from Ryan Jones (high jump), Rhys Williams (long jump) and fellow under-14s David Bowen (discus) and Rafe Hallett (javellin).

In the Plate Final, also at Brecon, Daniel Hodgson of Castell Alun came fourth in the 80m hurdles with a time of 13.4 seconds. Hodgson was also fourth in the high jump with 1.50m.

James Mills ran a time of 1:52.99 in his 800m heat at the Team GB Trials in Birmingham and in the Fairy Freckled Cow Trail Race (11k), Mike Robbins won the over 45s male competition with a time of 41m 45 seconds.

Alison Whitelaw also won the over 20s female competition in the Alwen Resevoir event with a time of 51m 20 seconds.

Three young athletes will be competing in the Schools International event in Bedford on Saturday.

Tom Cusworth (200m, Long Jump and 4 x 100m relay) and Megan Rogers (100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay), both of the Maelor, and Hannah Thomas (80m Hurdles, 300m Hurdles and 4 x 300m relay) who attends St Josephs, will be part of the Welsh Schools team.

* Fixtures this weekend include the Packwood 10k Road Race at Ruyton XI Towns on Friday (7.15pm), Moel Siabod Fell Race at Capel Curig on Saturday (2pm), Burtonwood 5 mile Road Race in Warrington and the Schools International at Bedford both on Saturday (4pm), and the UK Young Athletes League fifth round in Wrexham on Sunday (11.30am).

The Green Grass Fell Race (5m/1800') will take place in Llangynhafal on Wednesday (7.30pm).
