WALES - with eight players from the North in their side - turned the form book upside down to win the Veterans All-Counties Championships at Severnsides in Shrewsbury.
The Coed Talon trio of Peter Lacey, Doug Biddle and Tom Middlehurst teamed up with Bryn Jones, Brian Whitlow and John Cooper of Broughton and Bretton and Fred Pickford (Aston) and Geraint Evans (Rhos).
The team was managed by Glyn Lockett, who was assisted by Dave Walker and Mike Tickle.
"We were considered to get knocked out in the Prelims, with Warwick and Worcester as firm favourites," said team manager Glyn Lockett.
Wales beat Lancashire by just one point in their opening game but five wins in the second match helped put Derbyshire in their place.
Wales won five games and the match by 11 points against Staffordshire to put them into the semi-final.
South Yorkshire were next on Wales' hit-list with a 14 point victory setting up a grand finale against favourites Warwick and Worcester.
In a thrilling match, Wales recovered from five points behind to set up a nailbiting last game.
Wales lost it but scored enough chalks to win by two points.
"I'd just like to say well done to all players and officials, Dave Walker and Mike Tickle," added team manager Lockett.
