CRICKET - Quay's title bid is still alive says upbeat Burger
NORTH WALES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW - Martin Burger believes his CONNAH'S QUAY side can still win the Premier Division title despite the defeat at rivals Mold last weekend.
The Quay skipper, who scored 55 in his sides lowly 90 all out, admitted that he would prefer lose to one of the top five teams now rather than at the business end of the season.
"We were beaten by the better team," declared Burger. "Usman Butt bowled superbly at the start and Glenn Scott was told he had one more over after going for 22 runs and then took six wickets.
"We can have no complaints but St Asaph tomorrow offers us the chance to return to winning ways. We will not take them for granted but it is a match I would hope to win.
"It seems that nobody in the team rates them but it will not be easy and as I have said all the way through the season, we treat each side with the same respect. There are no bad teams in the league, otherwise they wouldn't be here.
"We know we need at least 200 when we bat as that is par, and we will take it from there."
Quay have the luxury of naming an unchanged side for the home fixture with bottom of the table St Asaph.
HAWARDEN PARK face a massive game in their bid for Premier Division survival as they welcome fellow strugglers Llanrwst to Alder Meadow.
Having slipped to a 104 run defeat at rivals Pontblyddyn and
subsequently dropped back in to the relegation zone, Park desperately need to beat the side directly above them in the table.
Captain Adam Doyle understands the size of the challenge, with bottom of the league St Asaph travelling to Connah's Quay and Bangor hosting leaders Llandudno.
"It is a big match," declared Doyle.
"We need a victory and with other teams around us playing sides near the top of the league this week, it is the perfect chance to close the gap on those above us and move out of the bottom two places.
"It will be the start which decides the match. We need to start well and make sure their Aussie does not influence the game.
"In the end, the best team on the day will win and hopefully it will be us. We have Jeff Henshaw and Campbell Marr back and that strengthens both the bowling and batting.
"Matthew Roberts bowled well and Nathan Pearson and Neil Worrall batted well so there are positives."
Marr and Henshaw replace Lee Taylor, who claimed the wicket of Pont's Phil Davies on his debut, and Michael Rapson.
BRYMBO, coming off a six game unbeaten run, take on Mochdre at Rydal School.
Having defeated table toppers Menai Bridge last weekend, confidence is high in the Brymbo camp and captain Dafydd Rhys spoke with optimism ahead of the clash against his former club.
"There are a few clubs in mid-table including ourselves who can really push on with a couple more wins," said Rhys.
With Mochdre only one place above the Tan-y-Fron outfit in the table, Rhys knows it will be a tough game.
"They have got several good young cricketers and in Gareth Davies they have one of the best players to have played in this league so we know what we are up against."
Rhys talked positively about last weeks victory over Menai Bridge.
"Our total of 148 was not particularly big but we fielded excellently and Chris Truelove bowled a match-winning spell for us.
"Unfortunately Chris and Sam Hayes are both unavailable this weekend."
Speaking about rising star David Lloyd, Rhys admitted that the youngster has more to offer than his batting ability.
"David's bowling and fielding are just as impressive as his batting," declared Rhys.
"He picked up three key wickets last week and it is really rewarding for everyone in the team that Dave has been putting in fantastic performances of late.
"He is also such a modest cricketer and never mouthy on the pitch. I would go as far as to say he is the best young cricketer I have ever played with or seen play the game."
Nick Jones and James Claybrook come in to replace the absent duo of Chris Truelove and Sam Hayes.
MOLD go into tomorrow's clash with title rivals Menai Bridge full of confidence having inflcted a 70-run defeat on Connah's Quay last weekend.
Mold skipper Jamie Griffiths admitted that it was the perfect time to overcome a series of poor results, and Saturday's tie represents another massive challenge for his side.
"Last week was a good win after a small run of bad results," indicated Griffiths.
"Connah's Quay posed a real threat so it was very rewarding for the lads to come away with a comprehensive victory.
"Usman Butt bowed as well as I've seen all season and he was well supported by Glen Scott.
"We face another important test at Menai Bridge but I back us to beat anyone on our day. The confidence amongst the lads is high at the moment so I'm hoping we can come away with another win.
Mold have Steve Burkhill and Ben Lewis available for selection although last week's six-wicket hero Glen Scott is unavailable.
"Unfortunately Glen is only available for a couple of games per season. His contribution last week was fantastic and he gave the side a very timely boost," admitted Griffiths.
Second place Menai Bridge go into the game four points adrift of pacesetters, Llandudno.
