Gap Connah's Quay chief executive Stewart Roberts knew Steve O'Shaughnessy was the man to lead the club forward as soon as he had met the former Caernarfon and Druids boss, writes TOM NORRIS.
Roberts described O'Shaughnessy as the 'outstanding candidate' for the job as soon as the takover of Connah's Quay by Gap Personnel was complete.

"Steve has a lot of good contacts, is well experienced in the Welsh Premier working with restricted budgets and used to doing a fine job, said Roberts.

"He is working towards his pro license and is a true football man with brilliant training methods.

"People will say that he has not achieved much in the league but that is largely down to the budgets he has had and the clubs he has been at.

"He has our 100 per cent backing and his vision for on the field fits very well with our vision off it.

"There were other candidates but he was the obvious choice and is here for the long term."

Voicing his hopes and plans for both the immediate and long term future of The Nomads, Roberts said: "Next year the main aim is to consolidate our position in the league. From there onwards we can look to improve our infrastructure and the club's standing in the league, he added.

"In the not too distant future we want to make sure we are in the 'Super Ten' and that means meeting all the relevant criteria. After that there is the target of European qualification. That is a long way off but it is something we strive to achieve.

"We will need to improve quickly as there are a number of strong teams in the Division now.

"In my opinion there are three tiers to the league – there are the top four, a group of six teams in the middle and then the strugglers.
Unfortunately for us we were one of the strugglers last season.

"We hope to turn the fortunes of the club around and with Steve at the helm we are confident it will happen. There is money to improve the players and, contrary to reports, there were only two minor debts which have been paid off."

Newi Cefn Druids are in action at home tomorrow when Warrington Town visit Plaskynaston (2.30pm)
