RUGBY UNION - Getting down to business for the coming season

Wrexham have begun training for their new season in Division Five North which starts on September 6 against Bangor, writes TOM NORRIS.
Sessions, which take place twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.45pm, are fitness and skill based and aimed at preparing all players for the new league programme.

Last year's first team coach, Russell Penrhyn Jones, has been appointed as Wr
exham's new Director of Rugby and will assist in the process of recruiting his replacement.

Wrexham Seconds have a full programme of fixtures against sides from all parts of North Wales in Division Six North. They entertain Llangollen at Bryn Estyn Road in their opening game of the season on September 6 and will then visit Mold Seconds on the following Saturday.

Wrexham Youth Team have a strong side for their new season in Division One of the North Wales Youth League and have reinforced their coaching team with the addition on first teamers John Roberts and Carl Turner.

They visit high flying Rhyl for their opening game on Saturday
September 6 and will then take on Mold in a local derby at Wrexham on the following Saturday.

They train on Tuesdays and Thursday at Bryn Estyn Road, starting at 6.30pm.

Some of the mini and junior rugby squads have started their training for the new season. The Under 12s hold their sessions at Bryn Estyn Road on Thursday evenings at 6.30pm and welcome any youngsters in their age group who are interested in playing rugby to come down and join them.

Wrexham have held free taster sessions for children at the club over the past two weekends following publicity at local schools with almost 50 children coming along to each session.

U10's coach Keith Williams said it was great so many children aged 5-13 came along, tried the sport and enjoyed it: "Hopefully they'll come back in September and join the club. We have squads for all ages so there's an opportunity for everyone to play the sport."

Meanwhile, Mold are still on the look-out for players ahead of the new season with the club set to compete in a number of leagues and cup competitions.

Anyone over 18 is welcome to attend training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Lead Mills between 6.30-8.30pm.

The senior side will have three teams in action throughout the season with the first team beginning their Division Four North season at Llandudno, the seconds starting their Division Six campaign at Ruthin seconds and the third team having a full list of friendlies.

And the fixtures have been announced for the North East Wales Rugby League with Flint Seconds starting their campaign away at Caer Borders.

The league which re-starts on September 13 sees Shotton host Rhyl while Denbigh Seconds travel to Colwyn Bay Seconds and Abergele Seconds welcome Corwen.

* Rhos rugby club celebrates it's 25th anniversary this year and they will be holding a special night at the Sun Inn, Rhos when they want old players to turn up in full force.
