Wes Baynes has made no secret of the fact that he wants to make the right side of Wrexham's midfield his own when the Blue Square Premier kicks off on August 9.
Baynes who is highly thought of as a right sided defender insists that the position directly in front of him is the one that he covets.

"I enjoy the attacking side much more than defending because there is less pressure," he said. "I prefer playing right midfield but if the gaffer wants me to play right back then I will quite happily fit in there.

"Hopefully I will get a good run right-wing and if I play well the gaffer will keep me there. He hasn't mentioned anything about where I will be playing yet but I played right midfield yesterday and hopefully my squad number will see me playing there."

Baynes, who played 60 minutes in the behind-closed-doors friendly with Shrewsbury on Wednesday, outlined his attacking instincts by having Wrexham's best chance at goal, his shot cannoning of the crossbar.

"I got through, had a few one twos and I think I should have scored but it was a good effort," admitted the nineteen-year-old. "It was a tough game, they were a lot sharper than us but we did well and it's good to be playing football again.

"Pre-season is going well. After the game on Wednesday I feel fit and sharp and it's just about getting match practice."

Baynes was thrust in to the first team spotlight against rivals Chester City in November last year following the arrival of Brian Little and the youngster managed to score his first senior goals during the 4-2 away victory over Lincoln in the final game of the season.

"It was the greatest day of my football career so far. Especially winning on the last day of the season and it was nice to say thank you to the fans," explained Baynes.

Despite admitting that he does not set goal totals, Baynes outlined his three wishes for the new season.

"More goals, promotion and a few cups," declared Baynes. "It would be nice to win something this season.

"It feels like a fresh start at the club. There are a good few young lads coming through like Chris Marriott who is a good left back and it's good to see.

"There is a big bunch of young lads who are dead close. The gaffer has said that he wants to build on the younger ones and that's great.

"It's what the fans wanted, they didn't want a load of new lads coming in and they won't mind young lads playing and giving their all.

"When I got my chance last season I thought I did well so from my point of view it went ok, but obviously I was gutted that we went down.

"I was happy that the gaffer gave me a chance to begin with and I hope to prove myself in pre-season and give him no choice but to pick me."

- It is pay on the day for the Wolves match tomorrow (£10 for adults, £5 concessions). Both the Yale and Mold Road stands will be open.
